Jamie Elmer’s Journey Through Yoga

My path in yoga began over 15 years ago. I was in college for dance in North Carolina and attended my first yoga class while at the Amercian Dance Festival one summer. At the time, as a dancer and a young person, life wasn’t the easiest. I was dealing with an eating disorder and back pain that made every day difficult. I must admit, attending yoga was not as easy as I thought it was going to be. For my entire life I had trained my body and my mind in a particular way. Yoga challenged my mind and my body in ways that I didn’t expect. It was emotionally and physically confronting.   After my summer course in yoga, I did stick with it. It continued to be challenging, but I always felt better emotionally afterwards. I moved to Los Angeles to finish my dance degree and continued to practice yoga just once a week. My back pain was at an all time high, but being as young as I was, I really didn’t know how to deal with it and figured I’d simply be in consistent pain, maybe forever. A typical dancer’s mentality!   One weekend my regular teacher was out of town, so I tried a different teacher’s yoga class. This was the first class that focused more on the breathing, and afterwards I felt different. Different than I usually did after yoga. This class was taught my Max Strom - the man I still consider to be my main teacher. By this time I was dancing in a professioanl modern dance company, and after taking Max’s class, began attending yoga classes more than once a week. It was still a physical [...]

Why Girl PowHER Yoga?

Middle School…do you remember? For many teen girls middle school is a time of self doubt and endless struggles to fit in. The pressure of school and friends leaves many girls feeling drained and mislead. Could you imagine if you had the opportunity as a middle school student to practice yoga? What skills would you have been given? How could these skills have shaped you at an age that is so difficult for so many? According to research from the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty’s 2005 Global Study, “Beyond Stereotypes: Rebuilding the Foundation of Beauty Beliefs,” 70% of teenage girls who feel bad about their looks respond by withdrawing from life. They avoid school, cancel doctor visits and feel afraid to speak up in class. So why yoga? Most teenage girls have at least one thing about themselves that they would like to change. Yoga teaches people to connect with their “true self”. The self that lies beyond the stress to fit in, the pressures of school and work, and family expectations. The practice emphasizes a mind-body connection and gives the girls the opportunity to develop self-confidence as they develop a new skill. The practice of yoga will encourage a positive body image allowing the girls to focus on the strength and flexibility of their bodies. Each week the Girl PowHER Yoga Program meets at several middle schools in Eagle County. In each practice local yoga instructors lead a group yoga practice of middle school girls as we explore key elements to finding our authentic self. Yoga teaches each of us to become more in tune with our body. It pushes the girls out of their comfort zone as they try new poses, inversions, balancing, [...]
